Did you know you can add extensions to Safari? They will add functionality that can enhance your user experience and ultimately, your security. This is not technically a safety tip as much as it is a feature that extends the functions of your web browser. There are all kinds of extensions available from the Apple website that will make your life a lot easier. Contact TechnoMinds to learn more about how Safari Extensions can benefit you on your Apple device.

Step 1. Open Safari preferences.

Step 2. Click the Extensions tab.

Step 3. On the left side you will see all of the installed extensions with a checkmark if enabled.

Do you do your banking online? Do you ever use a credit card to purchase something online? If so, make sure the website is safe. This is perhaps one of the simplest things to do in our list of tips, yet one of the more important ones.

When we fill out forms and pay with our credit card online, we want to make sure that our data that is traveling across the world to some remote server, is encrypted. Does the website have a security certificate and use SSL? How do we know?

Look in the addressbar and see if there is a samll padlock to the left of the address. Every browser (Firefox, Chrome etc) has some form of this. It might be located somewhere else, but it is there.

Click on the lock and you will see this alert window.

If you wish to inspect the certificate details, you can click “Show Certificate.” However, for the average person it won’t make much sense. What is important for you to know, is that the site is using SSL and your data is encrypted while in transit.

If you have any questions regarding on how to make sure your online transactions are safe, or perhaps you want to obtain a security certificate for your website, contact TechnoMinds. We are happy to assist you.

Many websites pretend to be something they are not. They can look exactly like the real one, yet really be a fake one that is trying to get your username and password. Or it could be a trap to infect your computer with malware.

For example, you get an email from what you think is PayPal. It has their logo and looks legitimate. They are telling you that someone has made a fraudulent charge and you need to take action. You click ont he link they provide. It goes to a website that looks exactly like PayPal’s login. You put in username and password and you have just been scammed.

Most modern web browsers have the ability to warn you if they suspect the website you are about to visit is masquerading as a site that it is not.

Step 1. Open Safari preferences.

Step 2. Click on the Security tab.

Step 3. Check the box next to “Fraudulent sites: Warn when visiting a fraudulent website.” This does not catch every fake site, but it definitely helps.

If you are worried that you may have inadvertently visited a fake site and given out any private information, don’t hesitate to contact TechnoMinds to talk about online security.

This is something that should not be neglected but instead fixed right away.

We have all heard the stories about hackers controlling someone’s webcam and seeing what they shouldn’t. Did you know that in Safari preferences, you can see what websites have the ability to control your camera, your microphone and many other functions of your computer? While this won’t protect you against malware that is doing things surreptitiously, it is the first step to take. You would be surprised at how many websites request access to computer functions.

Step 1. Open Safari preferences.

Step 2. Click on the Website tab.

Step 3. Explore all of the options here. On the left pane you select what you want to set the controls for. On the right, you can decide what kind of access the currently open sites have, Ask, Allow, Deny. You can also set the default for all sites you visit in the future. When in doubt, select Ask. This will prompt you when the website wants control of that function and allow you to decide in the moment.

We understand this might seem complicated to some or just more info than you want to know. Don’t worry. We at TechnoMinds are here to assist you. Contact us and we will be more than happy to set up an appointment with you at your home or office, at your convenience.

Have you ever had a popup window tell you that your computer has been infected with a virus? Or have you had an alert tell you that Flash needs to be updated? These are common tricks to get you to download malware to your computer.

You should always be skeptical of such alerts. The first thing you want to do is open your Safari preferences, if you haven’t already.

Step 1. Open Safari preferences.

Step 2. Click the General tab and uncheck the option at the bottom Open “safe” files after downloading.

You might be asking yourself how are you supposed to know which alerts are real and which are not. We understand, for the untrained eye, it can be difficult. That is where we come in. With a few lessons, we can teach you not only how to recognize them, but what to do if you may have already downloaded some malware.

Don’t panic, just contact TechnoMInds and we will help you.

Did you know that Facebook, Google, and other companies track you while traversing the web? They follow you to other sites and spy on everything you do. It is called cross site tracking. There are a few things you can do to help prevent it.

Step 1. Open up Safari Preferences.

Step 2. Click on the Privacy tab.

Step3. Check the box “Prevent cross-site tracking.”

Another very important thing to do is always log out of social media accounts. When you are done posting in Facebook or Instagram, remember to log out. If you forget and then visit other sites, you are being watched. Ever wonder how just minutes after searching for something in Google, ads for that very same thing appear on your Facebook timeline?
